31 and Change with Gina

31.4 at 160 average speed with Gina. I was actually feeling good in bed on Sunday morning and had thoughts of just staying in bed the day after the 72 But hey man, 30 more miles would put me at 500 for the month and I'm feeling good so don't want to stop it now. So I got up and dragged Gina out of bed too ha ha ha!

Very nice day at the start, sunny and not too chilly. Later in the day once we got to the coast, it was still sunny but getting dark as we left. Nice clouds though. I was feeling good and Gina was doing really good. Didn't look tired at all.  A couple of times I heard her huff and puff so I'd suggest she pull down her mask as there were not others around. But she said she was just catching her breath and never slowed so I figure that was good. She finished much stronger today than a few weeks ago, so that is good too!

3 weeks ago, we passed that guy who insisted on ruining my together time. I mentioned it on Strava then he blocked me or something ha ha ha! Of course when someone says they want to be alone with their wife, why bitch and moan like a little 5 year old. Some couples do like to be alone and have fun together without a 3rd wheel. Well, saw him again today at the beach stop. I looked right at him as he rode up so he would know it was me again. He just rolled by and sat down across the way. But that was cool, didn't feel like hearing his whiney voice ha ha ha!

But for me, feeling great on the bike and loving the bike again.

I must be feeling better because after a 72 yesterday, I should be tired but I kept looking at Gina's big butt thinking, Oh My Gosh so all these miles are doing me good ha ha ha!

Gina always looks mean in her pics but she's the sweetest thing!

Looks like she dropped me but pics can be deceiving at times hahaha!

72 Miles on SGRT w/Group

72 miles at 17.0 average speed. My longest ride in about 6 years, maybe more? But felt really good. Couple images from the video for now.  But I decided not to make the video. Too much drama and I think jealousy in the group. Like too many other outfits, you have the guys that ride and help and you have the guys and gals who want to compete with you but won't help.

I have one guy that is about my size that was a racer so everything is about race race race from what I see. Yeah, I know I am a big guy but I will climb if I have to. I get sick of hearing stories of being a racer but avoiding all the real rides. Or let's say, a ride with climbing in it like GMR. I suggest a GMR group ride then I am the devil ha ha ha! Too many cry baby comments about why don't I run the group then blah blah blah. I say it's all about getting out of a real ride rather than trying to race me on a 25 mile ride. And actually that gets old. I try to slow and ride with the group but then they suck wheel then sprint around for 1/4, if they are lucky, trying to make a race of it. OK, wait, I hold back to be a good ride partner, then you're going to race me? Wow, ha ha ha!

Even the women seem to be that way. I had one gal who would suck my wheel 50%  through the longer rides of 60 miles or so. Sure I am going to get tired at one point so I ask her to help for 2 minutes. Nope, I can't, WTF!!!! So I actually talked her into giving me a break for 2 minutes. Wow, gets old doing most the work and nobody wanting to help.

So it got to the point where I would pull most of the people for a long time on these rides. Then for the Monday night CHILL ride, supposed to be easy for beginners, I would ride my MTB. So the same people would get competitive on their roadies. So I would push for a workout and hop on a wheel. The same people who were sucking my wheel on my roadie, must feel inferior having a guy on an MTB keeping up. So they do whatever they can to drop me, even pull over to the other side of the road to get me off their tail. Been feeling good on the bike so I can say that most of them, I can beat anyway ha ha ha! About 3 that are still too quick. I can catch up but they can sprint away after I burn my energy. Of course, finishing 50 yards ahead of a guy on an MTB with knobbies while riding a top of the line roadie is not saying much.

So these punks keep wanting to make a competition out of it. So guess what, the last few times on my roadie, I just pounded them ha ha ha! No, you can't compete like you thought. Just because I was being nice didn't mean we were equals as I let you ride my wheel ha ha ha!

So this ride, the group started out like a bat out of hell. Actually a few fast guys that I know are going to do their own thing as usual. Probably better me by 1 mph on a 60 mile ride. So I just fell to the back at the start and watched the fools think they were racing. Soon I was up with the usual people, second group and a big group behind me. I think Mike held back and pulled that group. Of course we all know it is senseless trying to go all out with the clowns on your wheel knowing instead of helping, they will sprint around till they fade 1/2 mile later.  So it was understandable that he not put in too much effort. Though he said after the ride that he was having a hard time. No energy, stiff, not sure why but he held back a lot today.

But I was with a group of about 1- guys. Not sure what happened to some of them but the others, they would suck wheel then sprint around. It was kind of funny because we kept reeling them back in. It was Tom, Craig, and I. We were rolling pretty good together. So at one point, we kept catching up to these other guys who were fading but thinking they were going somewhere. Every time we would catch up, they would suck wheel but would not contribute to the group. These guys really annoy me!

So finally they faded so much they had to drop on the back and stay there for a long while. Then Craig did a long turn at the front, good pull! But the other 2 guys with us, 4 now, rolled around him as he waved them to the front, and sprinted off. I was right on them but then noticed Craig faded and could not increase the pace just then. So I watched him fall back about 30 yards. Well damn! I can't get myself to be that moron that ditches a good man. I didn't think it was fair after the effort he put in at the front.

So I fell back to help him as we were hitting the windy section now. He hopped on and somewhat recovered but with the underpasses, he would fall back a bit so I would slow again. A slow process but  we had closed a gap of about 100 yards down to 15. But finally, we hit a stretch long enough and windy enough to catch the other 2. I knew I could but didn't want to leave Craig. I don't like being that a hole I complain about.

Craig told me later he appreciated the  move to help him out. Of course man, he deserved that much! We did lunch then on the way, back, the clowns get up front again, the group clowns lifting the pace. A couple of riders did 44 and thought it was noble to race the others who were doing 72, okay! But some of the group and those other riders were pushing the pace. A few of us did our own thing knowing we would catch up anyway.  At one point, a couple of them raced off and opened a gap of about 100 yards. I was laughing inside knowing it was only a matter of time and even the rider that did half the ride, I'd have no problem reeling  her in too! The problem with being a wheelsucker is that once your ride fades or drops you, you're toast! But before they could fade, Craig did a good effort to maintain distance with them. When I was ready, I got up front and pushed hard after working into the pace, again not wanting to drop Craig as he was the best help throughout. We had one other rider with us that always wants to compete with me but knowing he's pretty much a wheel sucker or will sprint around me, I pretended he was not there knowing he wouldn't, probably couldn't help. I hate to compete with people when we are supposed to be riding together but at this point, I just wanted to reel in the other riders, which we did. Broke their spirits! Ah, before we hit the regroup, the others faded and seemed to want to hold back. OK, forget it, at this point, it is every man for himself. I did have the other guy on my wheel who left the group earlier. I pulled him quite a ways before the regroup and was well ahead of the others. Then I pulled to the side and asked the guy to help. He refused, what! So I pulled some more then later moved over again and said be a good team mate. He finally took the front ha ha ha! For a bit!

Then after the Pic golf course, we headed up to the base of the mountains. I held back some trying to pull the group knowing it would be more difficult on this section. I was trying to set the pace, concentrate on what was going on but then they started talking and falling back. OK, I hesitated a  few times and they would get back on doing well. But then would start talking again so I was like F this! I just took off and left them behind. At the top of the dam, I got a cramp in my hammy ha ha ha! So I figured this would be a good place to wait and get video of them coming up the hill.

I guess Erik was having problems. Not sure why but his nose started bleeding. I had 179 PR's on Strava and I think trying to keep up, or within sight, he outdid himself so his nose was suffering ha ha ha! Either way, he had about 100 PR's as well but if it makes you sick, what good is it? So we stopped at the top and took a break as Nadine spoke with some women she knew from the Monday night rides.

I think Erik was in a rush to get back so he took off early. Again, instead of helping the group, he took off and seems to have lifted the pace. I somewhat held back for the group but again, they were farting around and I wanted to get back too. So I took off and knew I would pass Erik and his bloody nose ha ha ha! So I headed after him then I noticed Mike was on my wheel. So we did a little teamwork across the dam and blew by Erik. He usually tries to jump on but I think at this point, he had already outdid himself so no way was he going to get on. Mike and I worked together the rest of the way. But those little climbs at the top were getting me. Mike looked good but I had to slow for a couple of minutes to catch my breath before resuming our pace. Mike looked good but said at the end he was done. That was cool, I had a 17.0 average at the end but went up just a little bit more to make sure I got in 72 while he stopped at the park where we started. So after the ride, I had a 17.0 and he said that was good as he only had 16.4 and was suffering. Hey, I did ok after all!

But anyway, those fools who keep trying to compete I think get their souls crushed whenever we do a real ride. Yeah, the 25 on Thurs is fun but these fools make the mistake of thinking if they win that ride, they're top dog. Ha ha ha, that is funny. I've done enough riding to know that there is always somebody faster. So why they compete with me is funny. Many times I am taking pics and video so finishing ahead of me on the 25 is like gold to them. So now, getting tired of them trying to compete, I crushed their souls ha ha ha.

And of course after the ride, they are all patting each other on the back, giving each other kudos on Strava, and liking each other's stories on facebook. It seems when I let them win the race that isn't there, they are all happy. But after getting tired of their crap, I compete back, not that it is that much competition but letting them know they still don't compare with the Beanz, they get their feelings hurt and seem to make it a point on the board to avoid my posts and only give each other likes ha ha ha!

What a bunch of babies! They're gods when you let them keep up but after not helping, it's time to crush them and they don't like that. More mileage, more effort, I'm feeling good and if they couldn't beat me then, they ain't going to beat me now. I don't even know why they feel like they have to compete. Just a bunch of babies who don't know how to RIDE TOGEHTER I guess!

Again, 1 Lady & 3 Gents Ride

Another 25 at 15.1 with a small group. I wasn't expecting to ride again but on the FB page, some members were talking about riding on Wed night. I thought for sure it would be cancelled because of the forecast. I rode Tuesday seeing it was the best day and only day with rain. Of course it changes everyday so on Wed, there was talk of the ride being moved up from Thurs to Wed. OK, I'll go again since there were a few riders planning to go. Couldn't be any worse than Tues as it was 5 degrees warmer and I would have my gloves this time. Oh yeah, I did have my gloves on Tues, thought I had packed them but put them in a different compartment in my bag. I reached in and searched with my hand but it felt the same as the inside of the bag so I totally missed them and froze my hands for nuttin'!

So Wed was to be better and should be a bit warmer with a group. But the talkers on FB cheesed out so there were only 4 of us, surprise. Had I known, I probably wouldn't have gone. But oh well, got in a few more miles and with Saturday's 72 miler coming up, I'd finish the month with about 470 miles. Another good month as far as I am concerned.

SO it was just Erik, Craig, Andrea and I heading out. It was actually pretty nice. Andrea is really fast and strong for a newbie.  She climbs up hills really well too. She has been riding the course as much as possible seeing she wanted to give it a go at this Ladies and Gents ride. Usually 25 riders and pretty fast compared to the Monday Night Chill ride on the Pacific Electric Trail. Andrea decided to give it a go and did really well her first time couple weeks back but only doing a large portion of the ride. I think this is the second time she has done the full course, last time with a little head start. This time the 4 of us was a good chance for her to get more familiar and get filled in on riding tips along the way. She did really well and almost ready for clipless pedals, she's going to be a monster on the bike ha ha ha!

We did a nice steady pace at a good rate for this ride and she was good all the way. Put her in the pack and she's going to be even faster not to mention, even with tennis shoes, she'll beat  at least 75% of the group up the hills. 1 to 3 mile climbs at gentle grades but enough to slow down most the group.

But it was more controlled this time I say. Very well behaved riders riding together. I wish it was like this all the time. I think more female riders would be willing to ride along. Not that I want more female riders, but I have seen too many show up and the group is flying across Baseline at 25+. I know the first time I was like, WTF! I thought it was a friendly ride ha ha ha! So it can be intimidating to many new and female riders who want to try riding with a group. Supposed to be friendly but there are some racers involved that make it a bit intimidating for newbs.

So this is the way it should be I think. Like Andrea, we did a good pace but she was able to learn while we went along. Big benefit for newer members vs 25 out the gate!

So the ride was very comfortable for all of us I am sure.  I actually enjoyed rolling along with the group watching out for one another. Nobody was too anxious to drop the others on this ride, made for a nice ride. Plus the temps were about 5 degrees higher than the previous night so I was good! ;-)

Solo Night Ride Chilly 43

25 miles at 15.1 average speed tonight. Wanted to beat the rain, actually wanted to ride my bike. Been feeling so good so I figure I'd keep it rolling. Last night's ride was cancelled after some gnarly weather but today was much nicer. I thought about riding earlier but thought Mom had plans. I guess not so by the time the clock hit 4 PM, I wanted to do some kind of riding.

So I headed out tonight solo on the Ladies and Gents course. I did wrap up pretty good but bouncing equipment bags around, I messed up and forgot my gloves. OMG, my hands were freezing and burning the first 5 miles or so. I thought about turning around but hey, I'm Mr. Beanz ha ha ha! Actually I know it warms up a bit just west of Town Ave on Baseline for some reason. So by the time I was at the Foothill connection, the hands were feeling better. But a good reminder for next time, MAKE SURE TO PACK THE GLOVES ON A COLD NIGHT!! Actually I am real good about it and I would say this is my second time in 23 years I have forgotten my gloves. Sadly, on the coldest night ever!

But anyway, man I felt good! Maybe my fitness is starting to come back with all the riding over the last few months.

My horsey tonight! Felt really good!

Of course I was wrapped up pretty good other than my hands ha ha ha!

Short Easy Spin around the Industrial Center

15 easy miles at 13.8 average speed. Woke up this morning and it was super foggy so there went my ride plan. So I waited a bit and then decided to go around the center for an easy spin just to keep the legs moving. Not to mention, a new tire on the rear of the bike and I like to do an easy test spin with new tires. You never know if you get a defect and it blows off the rim. Shouldn't with GP 5000's but hey, I've heard some horror stories.

Of course Gina chose to stay in a warm bed. But it gave me time to fool around. Like leaving my lights down the road and comparing brightness between the Cygo lite and the new light. Yes the Cygo still a "little" brighter but also more than 3 times the price and goes on the seat post. ;-)

                                                                           The old bike

A little cloudy at the beginning

Darn global warming! Not only is the mask for the virus now, but also keeping me warm with all this chilly weather we have been having.

The 'ol camera on the fire hydrant trick. That's the second time this month I've fallen for it! :-P

I Love this Light

$8 and some change. Just looking for an inexpensive light to mount on the back of my helmet. First one OK but used a tether seeing the band was so thin. Then found this one. Comparing them both side by side, the new one is GOOD!

Much better mounting system and easy horizontal to vertical mount. Much brighter.

I paid $8 and change. Another option if you search the ebay store is 1 for $9 but buy 2 get one free. Or buy a pack of 3 for $20.

Loving it but hate it cause now I want to buy a pack of 3 ha ha ha! The temptation is the work of the devil ha ha ha! Ya never know, I just might down the road since I like this thing so much.

I did read on the first ebay light that it was not very waterproof so this one, not sure, can't find info on the package. So I wouldn't submerge it or use it in the rain. I have the Cygolites for that and this one is just a little back up light to keep me illuminated.

But I'm loving the mount and the light!

OK, going to add something. These are $10 lights and not waterproof in water or rain. Also, this model, hold 1/5 seconds to change modes from solid beams to strobe beams. I read a few reviews where people complain that the modes change on their own and they can't figure out how to fix it because it malfunctioned. No it didn't Dopey! Read the directions ha ha ha!

Also, if you read the instructions, it is good to drain the battery then charge to full. I tested the light once I received it. It lit up for 2 hours then went off. I drained the battery as directed and then charged to full. Then it stay lit for over 6 hours. It went off then I turned it on again and it stayed on again but I didn't test the time knowing it was on for 6 hours already. I'll wait till I go riding then charge again. So the light says 5:45 run time but it seems one must do the drain and recharge first to activate the long hours.

Easy 31 with Gina

31 at 15.8 average speed. Gina did much better this time. Little breeze as always but not too bad. I was using it as a recovery ride from the day before and felt good. Gina finished strong and much better than last week so I was happy.

As soon as we started, ran into Mr. Morgan. He shouted BEANZ as we went by. With the fence I could not see back who it was so we just rolled back. Had a nice bike chat and he explained how we was trying to talk his wife into using clipless pedals. But as you can see from the pic below, this ain't going to help his side of the argument ha ha ha! He was OK though! He did get up before I got there with the camera so this image is actually a reenactment ha ha ha!

Saturday to Balbo 52 Miles 142 PR's (video on Monday)

52 miles at 17.4 average speed with the group today. SART north to Lakeview then through Santa Ana rd, Jamboree, Mtn to Sea trail to Balboa. I'm not even exactly sure where I was, I was just riding trying to keep up in the hills seeing there were a bunch of hammer heads that showed up for the ride. I knew it was going to be a fast one for me ha ha ha!

But did well and once on SART heading back to the train station, we really picked it up. I have to say, there are some terrible guys out there that have no idea what team work is about. One guy sucked wheel for miles then shot around getting about 50 yards ahead.  Let him hang out knowing he'd fade but why not help rather than show off......that you can't keep a pace ha ha ha!? Make more sense to stay in the group and help. But after fading, he got back in line. Only to be dropped. Another guy, I was 3rd in line doing about 21 when the lead guy pulled off. The next guy sat up and looked confused as if he never heard of taking a turn at the front. When he realized he had no choice, he sprinted off raising the pace by about 3 -4 MPH. Wow, I kept pace and figured why should I try to close the gap? Let the guy go and later he was back in line too. Some people just don't get it though.

After a bit, a couple guys shot off the front and pulled away some. It was Mike at the front and soon after dropped back as if to wait for me. I had been behind a guy that was doing well but got tired. I took the front and tried to get him on my wheel but he said, well thought he said that he was done and to go ahead. Later told me he tried to say it but didn't have enough air in his lungs to get it out ha ha ha! But I really didn't want to drop him after helping at the front. By this time, we had a gap on the riders behind us, who were the fools that shot around and faded.

I found myself out on my own. Doing about 20.5 IIRC trying to stay ahead of the guys with the lousy tactics. I looked back at one point and saw a group of the 3 gaining on me. They got about 30 yards behind me but I gave it my all trying to stay away.  I didn't want them on my wheel but if they did catch me, I surely would have taken their wheels ha ha ha! I was planning to be the weenie then!

But after about 2 miles, I looked and they were falling behind, yeah buddy! One guy leaving behind a group of 3 that though they were the sheot! I saw Mike fall back off the faster group of 4, maybe. I saw him up ahead and thought if I could catch him, the dudes behind me would certainly be toast knowing Mike would help me out.  He did and they chumps fell pretty far back. I had asked Mike why he dropped back, tired or did he see me coming up? He said he saw me and that being at the front of the group ahead of me, he was doing all the work and he knew they too would sprint around when they got the chance. That is what I thought. It really is not worth it trying to work with guys that don't seem to get it. My average speed bridge to bridge north on Strava was 21.4 so that was decent for the final section of the ride.

Some of the guys up there, I had not seen on the entire ride. Though they were ahead on that section, Strava had one of them at 16.0 average speed. So pretty much just pushing on the final section of the ride and sucking on the rest ha ha ha! Looking at the average speeds on Strava, there were a couple of guys I expected to be fast. But the rest, I had a better average. 4 or 5 riders skipped the lunch section riding through town and went back to SART via PCH instead of hitting Balboa. Having 300 ft more climbing, one guy had the same average speed and the other guys I thought would be faster were a couple points behind me. So that was nice!

I guess doing all these miles is bringing my fitness back up and it feels good!

The video

Some pics from the people and I'll have a video on Monday. Few of my stills from the clips as well for now.

BTW, finally figured it out! Since I use front and rear GoPro recorders, it's usually a pain in the but to watch them all and try to organize them in chronological order. This takes me an hour to do even before I can get started on creating a video. I have to watch them all, then delete the clips I don't want to use. Then trying to figure out where to put each clip where. I have to watch then a few times trying to squeeze them in order.

But I finally got it! I set the time on each recorder trying to be exact. So now, I watch and delete unwanted clips. Then I go and rename each clip in military time according to the time it was taken. So 9 am is 0900. I get about 25 clips so if I rename them all this way, they auto go in order. I do this for the rear recorder, then repeat for the front recorder, or vice versa.

So all clips are renamed then I send them to documents and all are placed in order.  So for example, the order might go like 09015, 0923, 1015, then afternoon, 2:05 pm is 1405, continuing on  up the clock from there might read 1425, 1502,1520 and so on.

So I send them all to documents and all placed in order. SO then I go back in documents and change the file names to 01, 02 ,03 on up to 25. Now everything is in order and I saved about an hour trying to watch every clip and figure out which goes where!

A video takes about 4 hours to create so no it's down to about 3 hours. SO this step saves me a lot of time and then I can put them in the editor and start ha ha ha!

I can see why many cyclists record but never produce. It can be a lot of work!

Thursday Night Ride

25 miler with the group at 16.4 average speed. Garmin is correct to what I see but Strava jacked me .2 this time, wow! But a fast group tonight. I actually hung back and even rode at the back with Nadine letting the others fly away. But we regrouped at the bowling alley on Bonita. After that, I applied some pressure ha ha ha! Nothing wrong with crushing a few souls along the way ha ha ha!

There is a sign on the Mountain Ave climb. I rode it one time with a guy on my wheel and the digital speed read out said 11 MPH. The guy was shocked that we were going so fast up a climb that is about a mile (?) But last night, there was a fast lady and putting on some pressure, I ended up right behind her as she went around and pulled away from the group. Got to the sign and it said 14 MPH! :-O

Wow, she was flying up the hill and I was able to stay with her. The last 50 yards or so, I was dying ha ha ha! But I wanted to stay with her to the top knowing there was a regroup point. Somehow I managed to hang on and as we reached the top, I said thanks for the tow but she kept going as I pulled over to regroup. Hmm, then the other rolled up and rolled through. OK, so now I have to catch up ha ha ha! Not too many people follow the plan when it gets going hot. And it was hot last night. Most of the group seemed to be racing. Supposed to be a nice ride for all but it's getting to the point where, if you slack or not a strong rider, you ain't keeping up. Good ride but I think a few riders have shown up lately and said, forget this! But it ain't my ride so I can't control it.

But a good strong ride for everyone, lots of PR's and I think this may be my fastest time on this ride.

But hey, I told you I get to ride with beautiful women! I will take a pic one by one cause if I take a pic of all them together, you guys would probably have a heart attack ha ha ha!

I Missed My Calling (Hair Stylist) & Lights

So I have never used a rubber strap mounted light. All my rear light secured by plastic mounts provided by Cygolite.

But I did buy a $10 rear USB light on ebay with a rubber strap just to experiment with the rubber strap mounts. This light is pretty cool but the strap is pretty flimsy. I figured I'd try it and see how long it lasts but not wanting to lose it, I figured I'd use a wrist strap as a tether. Couple bucks on ebay and I needed some back ups for my go pro recorders, and a couple extras.

So I used the lasso style on the thin section hooking onto the rubber strap where it is less likely to break as the light is secured by the second hole of the band. Than a lasso onto a vent of the helmet. Then secure light with the rubber strap onto the helmet.

Heck, I'd bet it's not noticeable at night and the weight my slow my average speed by .2 but it won't fall off!

Also I got some new pads for my helmet on ebay. $10 Foam style but much better than the old stinky worn ones that were in there ha ha. A wash, new pads, and still a little stink but it feels like a new helmet. This is my workhorse helmet. Night ride for the lights, solo rides, and helmet light straps, takes a beating but keeps on ticking!

I love long hair but Gina's grows pretty long. But every now and then she likes to have it trimmed saying it is hard to manage and looks scraggly. So I have trimmed it a couple of times and I think it comes out pretty nice.

Last year she had her sister, who is a stylist, trim it for her and honestly, it looked like crap ha ha ha! So this time she asked me to do it again and I did. Came out nice and I'm starting to think I missed my calling.

It was down to about mid peach! I liked it but she said it was too hard to handle!

I do love the white streaks though!

Nope, she didn't pay me but the agreement was that I get to take a pic without a top on so I could see it well. She knows me though, I just wanted an excuse to see her topless ha ha ha! Worth the effort of a trim!

I think it looks rather nice. She wanted it kind of short knowing it will grow back fast.
I will say it looks much nicer than when her sister cut it!
