The Euclid Chapel Climb w/Sandra

27 miles, 1589 ft of gain with Sandra. Well, Sandra said she is always looking for different routes and courses with elevation gain. She mentioned one time, never having headed east on Baseline from Mills and other close starting points we use. So I mapped out a route on Strava to see how long and how much gain we would have heading east on Baseline, up Benson, then up Euclid from 24th up to the chapel stretch. Man, that thing always feels steep ha ha ha!

I was actually doing pretty good but then got a cramp in my hammy just after the stop sign. Well dang it! I looked down and the grade said 13%. OK, I can see that ha ha ha! I waited a bit for Sandra to catch up. The cramp went away fairly quickly, like 30 seconds but I took a bit extra to take a pic of the road behind us to show the grade. Of course the pic doesn't do justice. Sandra stopped for a bit too then headed off while I was taking the pic. It was like a blink of an eye and she was half way up the final stretch. So I hopped back on, cramp gone, tried to catch her before she hit the top just to see if I could ha ha ha! I did, just before the top, no cramp so that was good.

While we climbing Benson, about a mile from our start so not too much of a warmup, she said, "man this is tough!" as we crossed over the 210 fwy.  It's a long stretch and from what I have seen, she likes to break up the long stretches by taking side streets to break up the climb. I myself like the long stretches. For instance, heading up Wheeler, I turn off Baseline and go straight up while she likes to turn on Emerald, work her way up and across side streets that dump us off half way up Wheeler.  She says she gets bored on long straight stretches but honestly, I think there is a reason the group she rode with took the zig zagging roads up ha ha ha!

So going up Benson is a decent stretch and she said it was tough while we were on it. I told her that if she thought this was tough, she was going to curse me once we hit the chapel climb ha ha ha! And I think she did! But once we were done with the climb, she was pretty happy with it. She kept telling he how a nice section that was. The usual rides seem to be pretty flat other than Wheeler. The little hill on Baseline just west of Town Ave is usually the tough one. But after doing the chapel hill at the start, all the rest of the hills felt like ant hills ha ha ha!

Since we did the climb at the start of the ride, I asked if she wanted more. She seemed to not want to do much more but then said she would just follow me. She said she was getting tired since she had ridden everyday this week. OK, no more big climbs. But at the last second, heck, why not a little more seeing the rest is not very hilly and we can cut the flat section short. It is a mid week night ride and the usual is about 20-25. We ended up with 27 as I had figured so didn't need much more this eve. But I did say, heck, lets go up Wheeler half way. Using her back roads of course to ease the pain. But once we were on, it was a breeze. Again, anything after the chapel hill is an ant hill ha ha ha!

The entire time after the chapel hill, she kept telling me how cool this course was. I liked it too. The only thing I think would make it better, is that we try to hit the Benson downhill with a little bit of daylight. That was only because it was the first time going down in years and I was not sure of pot holes, ruts, tricky curbs or whatever so it was a bit scary and we babied it down most of the way making sure we could see what was coming up. Now that I/we know it's fairly smooth, it will be nicer next time.

I did though take her up Benson, across 21st to San Antonio, to 24th, then across to Euclid for a reason. She says she doesn't like long uphill stretches so I wanted to end up on 24th and Euclid right before  hitting the chapel climb. I didn't want her to see Euclid from below heading up. I thought maybe if she got tired by the time we hit the fire station at the top, she might be tired and say that was enough and not want to go up the chapel ha ha ha! We got there and she was fine so it worked. Maybe, maybe next time or a ride in the future, I'll take her straight up Euclid from 17th or 18th just to see how she reacts.

So I cut Baseline short heading west seeing we had plenty of miles already. So we went down San Dimas Ave. Up to Gladstone, across to Walnut then continued on our usual route back across Bonita. I was surprised as she started to fade on Bonita. I asked if she was ok and she said the weekly accumulation was getting to her. So I slowed a bit and told her to take my wheel to conserve energy since we still had to climb to Baseline for the finish.

She did then we caught up to a couple of guys around White. They saw us and picked it up ha ha ha! On any other day, we could have easily caught them but knowing Sandra was starting to struggle with a climb coming up, I kept it down. Never really that important to catch the other guy anyway.

But we rolled up on them at the Garey stop. They looked back at us and asked how many miles we were doing. 27, and have about 22 already with 1200 ft  after heading up to the chapel. They were somewhat surprised while saying wow! They seemed impressed. So we continued on with them ahead about  20 yards then they turned and went down Towne Ave.

Sandra and I finished with the usual ending to our rides heading back up to Baseline. Of course, second ride in a row, at the end, Sandra said she forgot to start her Strava on her cell so she totally missed her ride ha ha ha! I tagged her on Strava to use my info second time in a row. Maybe next time, I'll refuse her request just so she misses a ride ha ha ha. Just kidding.

Up, Benson over the 210. Not all that bad but just before the fwy, there is a short steep section. Kind of strange, like 7% for about 10 feet, how did they do that ha ha ha!

Sandra Racing her shadow!

Looking up the road from Euclid and 24th at the fire station.

Somebody sight seeing!

Starting to get dark

Looking backdown the grade, doesn't do it justice.

Sandra brings one water bottle on most rides I've seen. But this eve, she brought two. I don't see her drink much water either, but after the chapel hill, she was chugging it ha ha ha!

Saturday Ride with the Boys Video

45 miles for me at 18.1 average speed with the guys.  Jose and Joaquin started from their homes. Joaquin had an extra 7, Jose maybe an extra 2. Tony B and I started from the train station where we all met. So their stats would be a bit different.

Sunday SART with Gina

40 miles at 16.7 average speed. Good ride, pics for now. El Tio. The dude who has the cycling team named after him. Met him today on the trail.

40 miles at 16.7 average speed. Gina looked strong and said she felt good. I was thinking 30 after a good effort yesterday but once we were about 10 miles in, she suggested 40. Darn Gina, my legs were tired but why not! Jose rode with us too. About 10 miles before the coast (end of trail) we ran into a couple of guys at a park. We chatted for a bit as I know a couple of guys from their club. Then they took off and we did about 1 minute later. We had a plan to hold a certain speed into the wind. The locals will tell you that this section gets windy. So these guys are about 40 yards ahead, I'm thinking nothing of it. Heck, I expected them to take off. But a mile later we pass them. They hop on the back for a while then a mile later, the guy in green goes around. He lifts the pace but we have a plan so I continue. He pulls away and soon looking back. I'm wondering why the guy in red hasn't gone yet. Then about 5 minutes later, he sprints around like a bat out of hell to catch the other guy. A race plan, against us and Gina? OK ha ha ha!

So watching the guys and they seem to be in the same exact spot since they launched. Maybe 75 yards ahead but not pulling away any longer. Then later, I notice they are coming back and still holding our pace. I had been at the front for 20 miles at this point. Other than a couple of short breaks as Gina took the front for a bit. But Jose has just been sitting on the back as I set the pace for Gina. So at this point, I said F it as they keep looking back while fading. So I told Jose to take the front but kept the pace. Then 2 miles before we hit the coast, we catch up.

We just go around holding out pace still. Then about 1 mile before the coast, They sprint around. Jose jumps on the rather quickly but I let them pull away a bit not wanting to gap Gina. Not even sure if she is going to hop on or just stay back. So I see she is on my wheel and so I start to close the gap on the guys. I do so gently not wanting to leave Gina behind. So we catch up then go around as they can't hold the pace much longer. Just a little fun time with a couple guys who decided that they didn't like being passed by a girl I guess. Could have been that or could have been that we have mutual friends and they didn't want them to know we passed them, I dunno!

But it was a fun little game and Gina always surprises me when she decides to go for it. Again, pretty windy by the coast but a 1/4 mile segment on Strava, she posted a 21.1 average speed when we went around. At the beach stop, she told me that she was feeling good and if that I had chased those guys right off the bat, she could have kept up the sprint.  Then she said that she could have gone even faster if I needed her to ha ha ha!

We'd been doing 30 mile rides only over the last 6 months of so. She rides Sundays only so not much saddle time. Past few times when we get out there, she says let's do 40 so I think her fitness is coming back.

My legs were burning today after yesterday's ride so I let Gina take the front for a bit ha ha ha!

After a second time at the front, still looking good!

At the beach rest stop. Telling me she could have kicked it up more on the final stretch. Average 21.1 on the final 1/4 mile to the coast.

After the ride, Gina feeling good!

El Tio

Joaquin bought these gloves, I want to say 3 or more years ago. He tried them but then said they were too pink. So he gave them to Gina. She liked them but said she was afraid to ruin them so she hadn't wore them till now that her other gloves wore out ha ha ha!

Getting ready to roll but not till I get a little visit to the boys room so I can tinkle ha ha ha!

45 With the Boyz

(Video Later) 45.76 miles @ 18.1 average speed today. Good strong ride with buddies Jose, Joaquin, and another buddy Tony B. Everything was going well till the end. Joaquin was ahead somewhere, Jose just turned off so I kept pushing on. After a bit I realized I was alone and we had 2 other guys join us for the return. I stopped to wait for Tony and the other guys. Then a couple of women rolled by telling me that Tony crashed. Ouch, I rode back but by the time I got there, he was already on his bike riding. Scraped up pretty good on various parts but seems OK though I know it's going to hurt in the morning. 🤣 FTR, the guy that took out Tony was not from our group. But actually, Tony said it was his fault as he was getting tired losing his composure and made a mistake getting too close to the other guy's wheel when he swung over and took his wheel out.

Some of the story but more later to describe the images and peeps.

Mike, new Strava buddy. Loves his ti Litespeed. We see him out there fairly often.

Strava buddy DanB, and his buddy Jeff. Cool guys!

Solo Night Ride Up Wheeler & Bonita

Nice 22 miler, 1100 ft gain. Another warm day but beautiful night. I started a little later and prefer it.  When I ride with others, they prefer 6:30 and a little daylight but I myself would rather start about 7. A little darker, the sun is almost down, enough light to see the first section but dark enough to know that my lights are visible to drivers.

Though I started a bit later, it was pretty warm. Heck, the GMR day we rode was an average of 82 but last night, though mostly in the dark, the average temp was still 85. That is warm for a night ride. A  high of 91. :-O

But a really nice ride. Strange thing, the ball of my foot got sore over the weekend. Felt tight and restless. I felt it on the Saturday ride then after Sunday, even my ankle got a bit tight. Maybe from trying to baby it, I don't know. Only thing I can figure is that I often walk around home on marble floors barefooted. Maybe it caught up with me. On Sunday, the trail ride, I felt that tight point right on my pedal (SPD). I remembered people talking about hot spots but never experienced that so I am not sure. But I did start wearing my sandals, pretty well cushioned around home and it seems to have gotten better.

So last night's ride was just an easy cruise without too much climbing and stress on the foot to make sure it doesn't fall off on a ride ha ha ha! It didn't and actually felt better. Still a bit tender, I know it's there but not uncomfortable like it was the day before. I'm the guy who doesn't take medications or drugs but this time, I took a couple of Advil just because it was so annoying. I haven't taken any meds in about 5 years for anything so I feel kind of guilty popping some Advil. I rarely take anything unless it's something serious. Heck, not even after root canals but this was too annoying ha ha ha! I feel like such a druggy ha ha ha!

But a beautiful night. Amazing but that 30 minutes made a big difference in traffic as well. On Wheeler, maybe 4 cars passed me. On Walnut, 1 car. On Bonita, maybe 10 cars. So I really enjoyed it and felt safe tonight.

So overall, a great night and a great ride. Nice to just take your time, do  your own pace and just get in a nice easy cruise on the bike.

7 PM, almost dark but nice

Nice looking scene overlooking San Dimas Cyn

Big moon and low. I stopped to take a pic but before I could get my camera out, a lady stopped, got out of her car and snapped a pic too. Then 1/8 mile down the road, 2 more ladies in front of their houses taking pics. Not sure if there was some kind of special moon tonight.

Still digging this XOSS GPS unit and the auto night light. As you can see my dark Garmin to the left on my stem. Nice and dark, can't see squat ha ha ha!

Nice Steady Ride with Gina on SART

34 miles at 16.4 average speed with Gina on the trail. Just a nice ride trying to cool off after a little heat on GMR the day before. Gina rode really well and hardly anybody at all other than Gina and I with the birds.

I did take my video recorder hoping to get some footage of Dan and Jeff who we met a few weeks ago. Thought they would be tickled to see themselves on video. But they weren't out there that we saw. Maybe they rode Saturday and this was Sunday. Not many riders parked at the train station either. Kind of strange like a scene from the Twilight Zone ha ha ha!

Did see Tony and Thai roll in for a quick stop. I was chatting with the one other guy out there when they rolled in and out. They probably saw Gina out there on her bike and got intimidated ha ha ha!

But a rather quiet ride. Nice day, weather so I enjoyed it. Gina said she felt good on the ride that day and she did well making it look easy.

Around Town and Some GMR

31 miles with 2500 ft gain. 4 miles up GMR. With Tony and met Jose. I asked if he was a cycling forum member. Nope, but he watches my videos on youtube ha ha ha! Must be a cool guy.

Tony and I were just starting out heading west when we saw Jose ahead. Caught up then he rode with us for a bit. At a stop light, he and Tony were chatting when he looked ad me and asked, "are you Mr. Beanz?". Yup that's me ha ha ha! I thought maybe he was a forum member but turns out he just watches my videos on youtube.

He had just rode up to Shinn Rd, tough steep climb. I avoid it myself ha ha ha!. Not really the climb but I worry about the fast traffic on that narrow section of Baldy Rd. I used to ride up to the tunnels fairly often back in 05'ish. But getting older and a few ghost bikes kind of tell me to avoid that road. Though it's a good one! Not sure how far Jose rode that day but it had to be a good ride if it involved Shinn Rd.

Jose turned south on San Dimas Cyn Rd so with a wave, Tony and I continued straight on Baseline. Figured we'd give GMR a try, at least some of it. The road was still closed to traffic so why not? Tony is prepping for the Rosarito Ensenada ride so figured we'd get in a bit of climbing too. Maybe 2 miles but once we got up, why not 4?

Max temp that day was 100 degrees and sure enough when we got to the top of our climb, my Garmin showed 100.  Average temp of 82 but it was so much cooler on the lower roads. But it's good to torture yourself on GMR once in a while just to see if you can! We did have a bit of a late start, about 11 am so once we hit GMR, it was empty. But I really don't think many people rode it that day as all the parking places were empty. Usually when the road is closed to traffic, there are 20 cars on Sierra Madre, 20 on Boulder Springs, other streets and just as many at the dirt lot. But there were NO cars anywhere other than the dirt lot, about 5. And we only saw about 5 riders on the climb that day.

So we did some of GMR then headed back down to Bonita finishing off the ride on local streets back to Euro Cafe on Mills and Baseline. Good ride and Tony was pretty impressed with the facilities at the equestrian center. Sure glad I found out they were there, perfect location for a refill rest stop.

Solo Old Fart in Claremont

Nice beautiful evening ride. Solo 22 miles with 1100 ft of gain.  Felt great! Changed the chain and cassette about a month ago and felt good but the cable last week made it feel even better. Wow, just everything felt good tonight.

I did take a different course with the tandem last night. Turning on Walnut to head south turned out to be much better than the end of Amelia and the T intersection. I turned off Amelia onto Old Baseline heading east, then south on Walnut. Great street to ride vs the others.

FTR, been posting in the Square Wheels Cycling forum. The Cafe is pretty busy and with many of the old posters from the Bicycling dot com forums I first signed on back in 2002 (?). They have a pretty good thread going on, daily ride reports and posting.

The Cafe with the Mileage thread sticky at the top.

Daily Total Mileage Thread

Just finished the first climbing section up Wheeler.

Old Fart resting at the park.

Kun's Park rest stop. Nice water facilities and benches. Wheeler and Bonita.
